A guide to Inheritance and Estate Planning

What is Estate Planning

Estate planning involves strategically managing and distributing your assets during your lifetime and after your death, aligning with your wishes and optimising effectiveness.

Key aspects include managing inheritance tax (IHT) to minimise its impact, ensuring you have the resources for your desired lifestyle and unforeseen events, and making financial gifts to loved ones and charitable causes.

Professional guidance from financial Financial Planners and accountants ensures comprehensive planning. Legal components include registering Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and drafting a Will to designate decision-makers and distribute assets.

By addressing these matters proactively, you can optimise wealth transfer, minimise tax liabilities, and provide financial security for your loved ones, ensuring peace of mind for yourself and your family.

What is Inheritance Tax

Inheritance Tax, often dubbed the ‘grim harvest of death’, is a tax levied on the estate of an individual who has passed away. Your estate includes all your money, property, and possessions. The first £325,000 of your estate is exempt from Inheritance Tax, a threshold known as the ‘nil rate band’. Additionally, any assets left to your spouse or civil partner, as well as donations to charities or community amateur sports clubs, are also exempt from taxation. However, any portion of your estate exceeding the £325,000 threshold is subject to a tax rate of 40%.

For estates valued over £325,000, a tax of 40% is applied to the portion of the estate exceeding the nil rate threshold. In essence, Inheritance Tax is a means by which the government collects a portion of the deceased’s estate to be distributed amongst beneficiaries according to legal regulations.
